Definitions and factors

  • 1 L = 1 dm³ = 0.001 m³, 1 m³/h = 16.667 L/min
  • US gallon = 231 in³ = 3.785 411 784 L, imperial gallon = 4.546 09 L
  • 1 kgf = 9.806 65 N, 1 lbf = 0.453 592 37 kg × 9.806 65 m/s² ≈ 4.448 222 N
  • 1 kgf·m = 9.806 65 N·m, 1 lbf·ft ≈ 1.355 818 N·m
  • 1 hp = 550 ft·lbf/s ≈ 745.70 W, 1 PS = 75 kgf·m/s = 735.498 75 W
  • 1 kcal/h = 4186.8 J ÷ 3600 s = 1.163 W, 1 ton of refrigeration = 12 000 Btu/h ≈ 3516.85 W
  • °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15, °R = K × 9/5

Two horsepowers are in use: imperial/US horsepower (hp, 550 ft·lbf/s ≈ 0.7457 kW) and metric horsepower (PS, CV, 75 kgf·m/s ≈ 0.7355 kW), about 1.4 % apart. kcal uses the international calorie (4.1868 J). Refrigeration tons differ between countries; only the US ton (12 000 Btu/h) is used here.

Calculated values. Motor ratings come in separate kW and horsepower series, so a nameplate «HP» does not match this table to the decimal.

FAQ

How many horsepower is 1 kW?

About 1.341 hp (imperial/US) or 1.360 PS (metric). Conversely, 1 hp ≈ 0.7457 kW and 1 PS ≈ 0.7355 kW.

How do I convert kgf·cm to N·m?

1 kgf·cm = 0.098 066 5 N·m, so multiply N·m by about 10.197 to get kgf·cm. Example: 1.27 N·m ≈ 12.95 kgf·cm.

m³/h to L/min?

1 m³/h = 1000 L ÷ 60 min ≈ 16.667 L/min. A 60 L/min pump moves 3.6 m³/h.

Can it convert Nm³/h (normal)?

No. Nm³/h is a gas volume referred to standard temperature and pressure, so converting to m³/h needs the actual temperature and pressure and the reference conditions of that Nm³, which differ between industries and makers — check the flowmeter specification.
