Left/Right Speaker Test
Play sound on the left, right or both speakers, per channel for 5.1 and 7.1, check polarity, run a frequency sweep or tone and pick an output device.
Privacy: this tool only produces picture or sound and sends nothing about your test anywhere. Ads on this page (Google AdSense) work separately — see the privacy policy.
To log Wi-Fi or internet drops and Bluetooth connects and disconnects over time, use the Windows program PortDock Hardware Tester (free).
Volume warning: start with the volume below turned down and headphones held a little away from your ears. High frequencies at high volume can hurt your ears and tweeters.
This browser cannot pick an output device, so sound plays on the Windows default output.
Left / right
Per channel
This output opened as 2 channels (stereo). Make a 5.1 or 7.1 device the default output and set its speaker configuration in Windows sound settings to get channel buttons.
Polarity
Listen from the middle between the speakers. «In phase» should sound focused in the center with full bass; «one side inverted» should sound wide and thin in the bass. If it is the other way round, one speaker's + and − wires may be swapped.
Frequency sweep and tone
How to use
- Keep the volume low and press «◀ Left». Sound should come only from the left speaker (left headphone). Check «Right ▶» the same way.
- If it comes from the wrong side, the speaker or headphone wiring is swapped, or Windows «Mono audio» or balance settings are worth a look.
- The sweep rises from low to high. Buzzing or rattling in one range can mean the speaker or case resonates at that frequency. Very low and very high tones are naturally faint on small speakers.
On equipment PCs too
It also helps with alarm speakers on shop-floor PCs, built-in speakers on panel PCs, and the left/right wiring of meeting-room speakers. For sound level units, see the dB & dBm converter; for the microphone, the mic test.
FAQ
Both buttons play on one side only
Check that the cable is fully inserted and the other speaker has power and volume. Also look at Settings → System → Sound → output device → left/right balance in Windows.
I do not see 5.1 channel buttons
If the browser opens the output as 2 channels, no channel buttons appear. Set the device's speaker configuration to 5.1 or 7.1 in Windows sound settings and reload the page. From channel 5 on, 7.1 order differs between drivers and browsers, so those are shown by number.
Does it download sound files?
No. Every sound is generated on the spot by this browser, and this tool's code makes no network requests.
