Webcam Test

Test your webcam in the browser: live preview, requested vs actual resolution, measured fps and a camera picker. Video is never saved or sent anywhere.

Privacy: camera video and microphone sound stay inside this browser and are never saved or uploaded — camera and microphone data and device names are not sent anywhere. Ads on this page (Google AdSense) work separately — see the privacy policy.

To log Wi-Fi or internet drops and Bluetooth connects and disconnects over time, use the Windows program PortDock Hardware Tester (free).

How to use

  1. Press «Turn on camera» and choose «Allow». With several cameras, pick one under «Camera» (names appear after you grant permission).
  2. Changing «Requested resolution» reopens the camera asking for that size. If the camera cannot deliver it, the browser picks the closest — check «Actual resolution».
  3. «Measured fps» counts frames that really arrive. In dim light exposure gets longer, so a 30 fps camera may drop to around 15 fps.

Reading the numbers

  • Requested vs actual — A web page only asks; the browser picks from what the camera and driver support. A smaller result can be the limit of the camera or the USB bandwidth.
  • Track setting vs measured fps — The setting is the target given to the camera; the measurement is frames that actually arrived. A big gap points at lighting, USB hubs or CPU load. Measuring needs a browser with requestVideoFrameCallback.
  • Camera maximum — The track capabilities the browser reports (getCapabilities). Empty in browsers that do not support it.

If the camera does not start

  • Camera access is blocked. Allow the camera in the site settings next to the address bar and try again. On Windows, Settings → Privacy & security → Camera must have «Camera access», «Let apps access your camera» and «Let desktop apps access your camera» turned on.
  • The camera could not be opened. Another program (video call or camera app) may be using it, or the driver may have a problem. Close that program and try again.
  • No camera was found. Check the connection, the «Cameras» entry in Device Manager, and any privacy shutter or camera-off key on the laptop.

On equipment PCs too

Use it to see what resolution and fps a USB camera on a shop-floor PC (remote support or simple monitoring) actually delivers. Industrial GigE cameras do not show up in a browser like webcams — for their bandwidth, see the GigE camera bandwidth calculator. For the microphone, use the mic test.

FAQ

Is the video sent to a server?

No. The video is attached only to the preview on this page and is never saved, recorded, captured or uploaded. This tool's code makes no network requests.

Set «Requested resolution» to 1920×1080. If it stays smaller, the USB 2.0 port or hub bandwidth, the driver or another app's settings may be the cause. Try another USB port to compare.
