Mic Test
Check your mic in the browser: live level, actual sample rate, noise floor, clipping, echo cancellation on/off and a 5-second local playback. Nothing is sent.
Privacy: camera video and microphone sound stay inside this browser and are never saved or uploaded — camera and microphone data and device names are not sent anywhere. Ads on this page (Google AdSense) work separately — see the privacy policy.
To log Wi-Fi or internet drops and Bluetooth connects and disconnects over time, use the Windows program PortDock Hardware Tester (free).
All three start off (the raw microphone). Toggling one reopens the mic so you can compare.
The recording lives only in this tab's memory and is gone when you close the page. It is never saved or uploaded.
How to use
- Press «Turn on mic» and choose «Allow» in the browser's permission prompt.
- Speak or tap lightly and watch the level bar. With several microphones, pick one under «Input device» (names appear after you grant permission).
- Stay quiet for a few seconds to capture the «noise floor». If «clipping» climbs on loud sounds, lower the input level in Windows sound settings.
- Use «Record 5 s and play» to hear how you actually sound. Turn echo cancellation or noise suppression on and record the same phrase again to compare.
Reading the numbers
- dBFS — Level relative to digital full scale (0). Touching 0 dBFS clips the sound. Speech usually moves around −30 to −12 dBFS.
- Noise floor — The level while quiet (the lowest 10 % of recent short blocks). Above about −40 dBFS while silent, look at fans, power or ground noise and mic placement. It depends on the mic, driver and processing, so there is no single target.
- Sample rate and channels — What the browser actually opened (track settings). If the browser does not report it, you see «unknown».
If nothing is picked up
- Microphone access is blocked. Allow the microphone in the site settings next to the address bar and try again. On Windows, Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone must have «Microphone access», «Let apps access your microphone» and «Let desktop apps access your microphone» turned on.
- The microphone could not be opened. Another program (video call or recording app) may hold it, or the driver may have a problem. Close that program and try again.
- No microphone was found. Check the connection and whether the device shows up in Windows sound settings → Input.
On equipment PCs too
Use the same steps for headset or intercom mics on shop-floor PCs and HMI panels, or a laptop mic used for remote support. It only needs a browser, so it works where installing software is blocked. For the output side, see the left/right speaker test; for the camera, the webcam test.
FAQ
I granted permission but the level does not move
Check whether the mic is muted or at level 0 in Windows sound settings, or whether the headset's mute switch is on. Picking another device under «Input device» helps compare.
Is my recording sent to a server?
No. Sound is handled inside this browser and this tool's code makes no network requests. The recording stays in the tab's memory and disappears when you close the page.
Why does it sound different with echo cancellation on?
The browser removes speaker sound, reduces noise and adjusts the level automatically. That is close to what video call apps hear; with them off you hear the raw microphone.
